Utah Drivers License Rules & Resources

Students under the age of 18 are required to take driver education.

Obtaining a Learn Permit

You may obtain your entry-level learner permit to drive if you are at least 15 years of age:

  • Schedule a learner permit appointment at the Tooele Driver License Office. Complete the driver license application ahead of time online.
  • Your photo will be taken and you must pass a vision test.
  • Provide proof of identity. View the required documentation.
  • Parent/legal guardian must sign for financial responsibility (17 and under only)
  • Must pass the written knowledge test.

If you are 15, 16, or 17 years old, the learner permit entitles you to operate a regular motor vehicle only if a licensed driving instructor, parent, or legal guardian is occupying the seat beside you. Be sure you know all driving restrictions for this age group.

If you are 18 years or older, the learner permit entitles you to operate a regular motor vehicle only if a licensed driver that is 21 years of age or older is occupying the seat beside you.

If you are 19 years and older, driver education is not required.
